| About: | Silmara Furtado holds a degree in Chemical Engineering and a degree in Chemistry Education from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and a master’s degree in Chemical and Biochemical Process Technology from the same institution. She is currently a PhD student of the Graduate Program in Engineering of Chemical and Biochemical Processes, belonging to the School of Chemistry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She worked as research assistant for three Petrobras Research and Development projects: (a) two related to the oxidative stability of diesel-biodiesel fuel mixtures, where the activities consisted in the implementation of a methodology of oxidation stability tests, storage and thermal stability of different types of biodiesel using the Rancimat method, and the evaluation of the effect of alcohol, water and glycerin on these properties; and (b) and the third focused on the production of olefins via Alcohol Chemistry, whose main objective was the study of the synthesis of 1,3-butadiene via ethanol in a single step, proposition of a process, optimization of the reaction conditions, scale expansion, purification of olefins and economic evaluation of the process. Parallel to his doctoral course, he acts as: (1) president of the ACS UFRJ Student Chapter - student chapter of the American Chemical Society at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro -, (2) member of the university extension project Catalyzing the Circular Economy (linked to the School of Chemistry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), (3) academic tutor of the Reditus Institute, and (4) STEM Institute for Elementary Teachers Alumni Board (Ingenium, based in Ontario, Canada). He was part of the team of collaborating authors of the books Catalisando a Economia Circular (Editora UFRJ) and Circular Economy: A New Mindset on Sustainable Development (Amazon). |
